Melba Liston, an accomplished trombone instrumentalist, composer, and arranger, born in 1926. “Having learned the trombone as a child, Liston got her first job at the Los Angeles Lincoln Theater, where she began performing, composing, and arranging for the other acts there. In 1950, Liston was invited to join Dizzy Gillespie’s band, for whom she arranged several of the songs they performed. She also spent several years collaborating with pianist Randy Weston, and started her own all-woman quintet in 1958. As a pioneer of jazz performance and arrangement, Liston paved the way for other women in the industry.” Source(Photo Credit: The Jimmy and Jeannie Cheatham Collection, LaBudde Special Collections, University of Missouri-Kansas City) -- source link
