A Withnail birthday card I illustrated for a friend then completely forgot to blog about. I always think this scene, when they’ve arrived at Crow Crag in the middle of a f’ing gale, and Withnail takes a seat, is a part of the film where Withnail is at his most ‘Withnailliness.’I find him an incredibly tricky character to convey facially. You know that Withnail’s personality is sulky, devious, pompous, flamboyant, cowardly and a myriad other facets but capturing that, drawing what you think Withnail actually looks like is something I don’t think I’ve nailed properly yet (no pun intended).Perhaps it’s the sign of a great, complex performance, there’s no easily defined physical actor on display as much as there is a smorgasbord of personalities to try and distill into just one face. I’ve a pile of Withnail And I sketch sheets that aren’t yet quite right for the illustrations I would want to tackle. I was fairly happy with my Uncle Monty sketch, drawn when Richard Griffith sadly died back in 2013. Then there’s Paul McGann’s Marwood who is equally tricky to capture in a drawing. One of these days, hopefully I’ll nail ‘em.I just today enjoyed listening to Bruce Robinson give a wonderfully rambling director’s commentary, packed with his memories of making the film. Well worth a listen for Withnail fans. -- source link
