historicwomen: Lady Xu Mu 690 BC The first recorded poetess in China was Lady Xu Mu. She was from the Wei Kingdom but when she married she had to leave her homeland for the Xu Kingdom. She expressed her homesickness through her poems Bamboo Pole and Spring Water. Xu Mu wrote a great deal more poetry than this, but much of it was lost. Some anonymous poetry has been attributed to Lady Xu Mu. When Xu Mu realized her nation was in distress, she tried to return to her homeland to appeal for military help. Her chariot was overtaken, and she was forced to return to the Xu Kingdom. This inspired her poem Speeding Chariot, a criticism of the weakness of bureaucracy in China. Luckily, Xu Mu’s appeal was heard and the crisis in her kingdom was resolved with help from the Wei Kingdom. Because of her heroic actions, Lady Xu Mu is considered a patriot. -- source link
