softimooni:sersi:After that, I had a really hard time finding a reason for being over there, you know?Sooo, this has been on my mind a lot. Sam watched his wingman, and i’m gonna assume they were probably close friends if not best friends considering how badly its affected him, Riley, get shot out of the air and into his death. Even now, he talks about it and he feels guilty because he couldn’t do anything about it. Which…just completely explains why he did a complete 180 in CW as soon as Rhodey was hit? Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure Sam would’ve went after him regardless but i mean– like, Vision who did the actual thing didn’t move an inch. But Sam? Sam just went right after Rhodey. He literally doesn’t even hesitate. As soon as Rhodey starts falling, he’s chasing right after him – in sync with Tony. As in, they were equally desperate to catch Rhodey, which means the guilt and distress and concern Sam was feeling in that moment was akin to that which Tony, who has years of history with Rhodey, who’s Rhodey’s best friend, was feeling. That’s HUGE, because Sam and Rhodey don’t really know each other (even Tony says “We (Sam and he) don’t know each other very well”), and their on opposite teams. But Sam reacted like that. And it’s probably because seeing that must have been like reliving Riley’s death. Reliving that trauma. When Sam lands, he says sorry when it’s not even his fault. He gets shot by Tony – not Vision, but Sam. He avoided Vision’s shot that was aimed for him, just for it to hit Rhodey, which he did not intend for and which he could do nothing about. And then Rhodey falls, and Sam does everything he can to try save him.And then he wasn’t even allowed to look at Rhodey when Rhodey first crashed. He landed after Tony got a read on Rhodey’s vitals, which means he didn’t hear them, he just saw Rhodey’s body and he must’ve thought Rhodey was dead. Who even knows when he found out Rhodey was alive? How long did he sit there with that gnawing guilt? How long did he sit there thinking about and reliving Riley’s death? How long did he sit there thinking about all the ‘what ifs’ and the ‘could haves’? And then when he asks Tony about Rhodey later, he’s faced away, he doesn’t meet Tony’s eyes until after they’ve moved on from that topic of conversation. He carries that guilt. Sam Wilson did everything he could for Rhodey that he couldn’t do for Riley. Sam Wilson did everything he could, but there was nothing he could’ve done to stop any of it from happening. -- source link
