Warning: this is where things get a little bit serious. This post has references to mental health, and some could be triggering or seem insensitive. These views are not my own, and I only chose to write it this way because I feel that it fits these characters and their personalities (e.g. Margaret is relatively vain and desperately wants to maintain her status, and lashes out at anything that could threaten that). This post should be tagged appropriately, but if anyone wants me to add a specific tag or if you have any issues or concerns about my portrayal of mental health in this post (I’ve struggled with it myself, but I’m not an expert, and everyone’s experiences are different), please send me an ask! My inbox is always open!Anyways, the story part is under the cut.Despite their originally happy marriage and incredibly comfortable living conditions, the newlywed couple fought often. Margaret had always been quick to speak, only holding her tongue when it suited her interests, but it didn’t pair well with Aaron’s soft-spoken nature. The slightest thing could set Margaret off, and Aaron only made the arguments worse. If Arne, Aaron’s servant, failed to step in, they could probably maintain an argument for hours. Their most heated topic of discussion, however, was Aaron’s father. Aaron had warned of her of his father’s ailing health, but she feared for her safety as well as her and Aaron’s future–and their reputation, of course.“You have so much money, you have all of this,” Margaret shouted, her voice seeming to echo through the parlor. “You can afford a doctor to help him, so why don’t you?”“I’ve told you this before, Margaret, I’ve tried. He doesn’t want help. He’s told me he wants to die on his own terms, and I’ve tried to be alright with that, but your needless stubbornness isn’t helping!”“Surely there’s a doctor out there who can–”“They’ll just send him to an asylum somewhere, Margaret! He’s been like this since before I was born, I know how to handle it! Arne knows how to help me, and–”“–and I’m afraid, Aaron! I’m afraid for myself, for you, for–”“–for your reputation?” Aaron spat bitterly. “–for our child!” Margaret was practically screaming now, and it took a moment for her to realize what she’d said. As it dawned on her, her face stilled as she breathed heavily, waiting for Aaron to process what she’d said. “You’re pregnant?” Aaron gasped, looking at his wife in disbelief. “Yes. The doctor said I shouldn’t tell anyone yet, I’m still too early on, but he knows about your father’s…difficulties, Aaron, and he warned me that those kinds of things sometimes run in families, and I–”“His portrait is right there, Margaret. It’s right there. He fought, back in France, for his country, Margaret. He isn’t some creature, he’s a human being, he’s just sick, and–”“You and I both know that isn’t what caused it.”Aaron paused for a moment, turning his back to Margaret in stone-faced silence. “Don’t you dare blaspheme my father again. Ever. ”Margaret tried to interject, but Aaron put his hand up, gesturing her away. His accent had returned with his anger, and tears began to form in his eyes, and Margaret finally knew that it was time to step away. -- source link
