Bog Body (by markhealey)When I was at the National Museum in Dublin, one of the things I was the most excited about were the bog bodies. I’ve been fascinated with mummies ever since my obligatory ancient Egypt phase as a kid, and I was far too excited to see them up close. It is a strangely moving experience. Each of the mummies is in its own little cubicle, enclosed, with a little bench to sit on and ponder the dead. Now, I’ve seen my fair share of mummies, mostly Egyptian, but never so bare and so close. Most look like average mummies, and one has an intact, but flat head. The cartoonish quality I think took away from the gravity of the situation. Strangely, the one bog body that tugged at my heartstrings was simply a torso, which had been accidentally chopped up by peat cutters. Most of it was crushed, but the perfectly preserved arm lay there, outstretched, as if he was still waiting for someone to reach out and hold his hand. -- source link
