Semeru Volcano and Tengger CalderaSemeru has been erupting almost continuously since 1967 with small to moderate eruptions. The stratovolcano mostly erupts a relatively small amount of smoke and ash on a surprisingly regular bases (about every 10 to 30 minutes), but occasionally the mountain will send out lava and pyroclastic flows. Some of the larger eruptions have claimed lives, with about 500 killed since the current eruption started in 1967. Semeru is the tallest volcano in Java, Indonesia at 3,676 m (12,060 ft).Immediately to the north of Semeru is the 16-kilometers-wide Tengger caldera (partly shown in the foreground of this photo). It is 820,000 years old and houses 5 overlapping stratovolcanoes, each with their own caldera. The youngest one, Bromo, is the only one currently active, and it is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia.
