George Takei campaign poster, Los Angeles, California, fall 1973. @georgehtakei. In September 1973, Los Angeles held a special election to fill the city council seat left empty by newly-elected mayor Tom Bradley. Of the five candidates seeking to replace Bradley, Los Angeles native and “Star Trek” star George Takei placed second, losing by only 1,647 votes. During the race, the other candidates complained that Takei’s distinctive and booming voice gave him an unfair advantage. Mayor Bradley later appointed Takei to the Board of Directors of the Southern California Rapid Transit District and, in 1978, Takei was called away from the set of “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” to case the tie-breaking vote in favor of the creation of the Los Angeles subway system. In 2005, Takei publicly revealed that he is gay; he has been in a committed relationship with his husband, Brad Altman, for nearly thirty years. #lgbthistory #lgbtherstory #lgbttheirstory #gay #bi #trans #lesbian #sulu #trekkie #pride #takeiforpresident #ohmy #fridaymood (at Los Angeles, California) -- source link
