Dive into the pastWhen the government decided to build a hydroelectric dam in 1959 on the Xin An river, the Lion city of Shi Cheng (once the capital of Zhejiang province in China) was buried under the rising waters of lake Quiandao to a depth ranging between 25 and 40 metres. The city is around 2,000 years old, being inaugurated during the Han dynasty (25-200CE),and filled with old buildings, palaces and temples. Ironically, considering the ravages of both the cultural revolution in the 1960’s and rampant modernisation related destruction throughout the country, it remains the best preserved ancient city in the country, giving us a glimpse into a past China now vanished upon the land’s surface. It is now possible to dive and explore as a tourist.
