coaltar-of-the-deepers:lopmon:adumbrant:Hollywood is patheticAkira is literally about the influence of Imperialist America in post-Pacific War Japan this is absurdwhile the above are all just cash grabs and a chance to white-wash the films, I actually *DO* think there’s something interesting you can do with Akira.Because while Imperialist America in Post-War Japan is a major THEME of the anime, that’s not the basic tension.The basic tension of the movie is about an increasingly militarized police state against a younger generation who have been betrayed and abandoned by the system, even systemically gutted.I wonder where we’ve heard that before…now granted I imagine literally ZERO producers, writers, or directors will even THINK of this parallel, much less want to put money behind it in this specific context. But it is an interesting adaptation worth examining, maybe even writing up a draft for. -- source link
