1957 photo of construction work in Ontario on the St. Lawrence Seaway, an ambitious plan to bypass the various obstacles (the largest being Niagara Falls) that obstructed shipping traffic from coming up the St. Lawrence river and reaching the American and Canadian heartland via the Great lakes. Despite ambitious promises from its promoters, the Seaway never produced the promised economic gains, largely because the shipping container was invented right around the same time. The Seaway was, due to cost concerns, constructed too narrow for the giant container ships that would emerge over the next 50 years, and therefore the ports of the Great lakes would miss out on most shipping traffic. -- source link
