The Wainamu Stream is one of several waterways in the Waitakere Ranges that loggers used to transport massive kauri tree trunks down to the coast for milling. It is a pretty small stream so they built a dam at the top and backed up enough water to cause a torrent, flushing the logs downstream. The mossy lump on the right is a 6ft diamiter log that never made it to the sea - it has been wedged in the river bank for round about 100 years now. -- source link
