ladymazzy:partialbirthabortion:seandotpolitics:Abortion Clinic Employee Shares How Some Pro-Life Women Act When They Come In As CustomersI am not surprised that anti-choice zealots would hypocritically obtain abortions, but I am thoroughly fucking shocked that they wouldn’t even attempt to hide their anti-choice views when doing so. Read “When the anti-choice choose,” a collection of anecdotes from abortion providers about serving this kind of patient. This sort of aggressive cognitive dissonance is one of the many ways that you can see how cult-like being an anti-abortionist is. For many, it’s an identity; any contradiction in their actual actions is like a blow to their sense of being. So they’re going to do things like try to avoid formally giving consent, even as they request the procedure. You can also see it when people who identify as ‘pro-life’ add all their caveats (exceptions for rape, incest, pregnancy in children etc), but continue to insist that they’re not ‘pro-choice’. For people like this, the ‘anti-abortion’ identity is far more important than any lived reality. I’ve also got a bone to pick with just how much their rhetoric has infected our general language around obstetric care. Everything from how people seem to assume that pregnancies are always viable, or that ectopic pregnancies can be ’re-implanted’ (!), to the misuse of general obstetric terminology. The much peddled notion of a ‘late term abortion makes *no sense* if you’re using the language properly. Aside from the painful fact that the vast majority of terminations carried out after 20 weeks are done because of threats to life or severe malformation (often incompatible with life), late term * does not mean* third trimester. A 'full term’ baby is born in the third trimester in the 40th week of pregnancy (counting from the 1st day of the last period).Late term is when the pregnancy goes beyond that 40 week point. Late term means 'overdue’. It does not mean 'babies which can be delivered 24 weeks into pregnancy and may be saved if you have the will and the right medical equipment’When a pregnancy is in the late term stage, it always needs to be 'terminated’! Whether through eventual spontaneous labour, or being induced; you cannot continue a pregnancy indefinitely after all…Given that anti-abortionist care primarily about their identity as 'not baby killers’, rather than empathy for the potential range of actual real lived experiences, it’s no surprise that they play fast and loose with the language because it actually means very little to many of them. They don’t need to understand how pregnancy works (and sometimes doesn’t work), because they don’t care about pregnant people. -- source link
