Jewish dancers in Israel from (left to right) southeastern Yemen, central Yemen, northern Yemen, Morocco, Libya, and Bukhara. Between ancient Israelite life and modern Israel, conquest and exile have brought Jews into contact with many cultures in many locales, sometimes by choice and sometimes by regulation. Even the woman known by tradition as the first Jewish choreographer and performer, Miriam, was bred and raised in slavery in Egypt and took part in the Exodus. The Torah describes Miriam leading a great celebration in dance and (…) although we cannot know what she actually danced, Miriam created a communal ecstatic dance unifying her community. What she did was such a powerful expression that her dance was remembered from those ancient times and has been inspiring ever since.
