Julia Volkova has finally released her newest song, Просто забыть/Just Forget. The style of the new single is different than her preceding singles, containing influences of deep house. Julia had even mentioned she liked this genre back at her fan meeting in February, which, looking back, was a hint for what the style of the new single was going to be.As always, fans had mixed reactions - Some praised the song for it’s modern style while others called it boring and uninspiring. The single definitely sounds current, fitting with what is trending in music at the moment, but does borrow inspiration from pre-existing songs. For instance, a couple of components that stand out are the voice effects used to make Julia’s voice deeper and the repetition used in the chorus. This sounds similar to ZHU’s music, who uses these elements heavily and perhaps was the one who really put deep house on the map with his song “Faded”. ZHU explained that the voice effects in his music have a meaning, changing pitches continuously to represent different characters in each song.VOICEFitting with the deep house genre, the song can be described as “chill” and calls for vocals at a lower pitch. This definitely works with Julia’s current situation and what she is capable of vocally. The singing style also works better for live performances for several reasons. Firstly, it does not require Julia to strain her voice to hit any high notes. Secondly, the singing style does not call for support for strong back-up vocals that overpower her own voice. Thirdly, even if the song is lip synced at performances, it will make it a bit harder to discern whether Julia is singing live or not. (During the Mayovka Live performance when Julia interacted with the crowd, her speaking voice matched the singing voice. This is not typically the case with such songs as Nas Ne Dagoniat or Derzi Ryadom, which instantly gives away the fact that she is lip syncing due to a differentiation in speaking vs. singing vocals. Also, keep in mind that lip syncing during events is not up to the artist, but up to the coordinators of events, especially for TV performances, which are usually always lip synced for better sound).LYRICSThe lyrics to the song are not the best, but not the worst. Obviously they sound much more coherent in Russian than when translated into English, but overall they are still pretty basic. It seems like the chorus is a missed opportunity, with “poprobui menya” being repeated 6 times. This could have been made a little more interesting with some differentiating lyrics, but going back the the deep house genre, this technique is what is fitting within that style.Overall, the song is a step up from her previous work, with Julia’s music getting progressively better over time:All Because of You/Sdvinu Mir sounded quite rough and did not use her voice at its best.Davai Zakrutim Zemlyu/Didn’t Wanna Do It probably had the worst lyrics of any song out there (both in Russian and English) and was exactly the type of music Julia used to make fun of during t.A.T.u. times.Derzhi Ryadom was a bit more radio-friendly and catchy, but the backup vocals made Julia’s voice sound foreign, as if someone else was singing the chorus for her while her voice was used as an accent.Spasite Lyudi Mir had lyrics that had more meaning than Julia’s other singles, dealing with issues of politics rather than personal relationships. The guitar in the instrumental also added to the strength of the song.Prosto Zabit is much more catchy and much more pleasant to listen to than Julia’s previous singles. It has a good beat and seems like something that will appeal to a larger audience than her previous work. Though it is not the most original sound, Prosto Zabit shows that there is potential for Julia to find a music that has a hook and hopefully is a sign that her future music will only keep improving.Comment with what your impression of Prosto Zabit is: http://bit.ly/2sEfBIcPlease note that is an opinion piece.
