Ever seen lightning like this before? ️ During a thunderstorm in July 2017, a Cloud Cam at the Gemini Observatory in Hawaii snapped a stunning picture of two types of lightning - red sprites and blue jets - in the same frame. This is incredibly tricky to do as the flashes last just tenths of a second. Red sprites are bursts of electricity that crackle through the upper regions of the atmosphere and move spaceward, whereas blue jets are a lot lower, and blast upward from the tops of clouds. : International Gemini Observatory/NOIRLab/NSF/AURA/A.
