As much as I love the whole Smoldering Wandering Prince with a Grudge and Tragic Story format, I want to point out that middle-class gentle-hobbit Bilbo with his tidily maintained Bag’s End, his well-stocked larder, his awareness of thieving relatives (but not pointing it out directly- he just hides the silverware), his Unparalleled Choice of Gardener, has brains and virtues as well, and which is increasingly obvious the further he goes from from home, even it is not wilderness survival and war experience. In fact, one of the most interesting thing about Tolkien’s narratives is that although he writes kings and heroes and “histories” made by them, his main narratives, the Fellowship with its four hobbits, Thorin’s Company with its toymakers, merchants, and blacksmiths are about common men called to become greater than they thought they could be and fulfilling that hope and beyond. -- source link
