New York Times, June 7, 1919: Indict Arnold Rothstein. Charged with shooting detectives during raid on apartment.A Grand Jury returned two indictments yesterday against Arnold Rothstein, well known in certain sporting circles, charging him with assault in the first and second degrees by shooting Detectives John J. Walsh and John McLaughlin of Inspector Dominick Henry’s staff on Jan. 19, when they attempted to break into rooms of an apartment at 301 West Fifty-seventh Street. Walsh and McLaughlin, who had been trailing and arresting gamblers, said they suspected that gambling was in progress in the apartment rooms and when denied admission they forced the door, but were driven back by pistol shots. -- source link
