The Hobbit: An Unexpected JourneyDirected by Peter JacksonScreenplay by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro (based on the novel by J.R.R. Tolkien)New Zealand / USA, 2012 Watched on 6th January 2014Second viewing There were a few films at the end of last month which I didn’t write up for this blog, due to being busy over Christmas and then ill over New Year. (I’m still a bit ill now, but I can function at least.) Most of them were rewatches, apart from the Talking Heads concert film Stop Making Sense, which was a very welcome Christmas present. Anyway, with that out of the way… In preparation for seeing The Desolation of Smaug later in the week, today I rewatched An Unexpected Journey. My original thoughts still stand – there are good bits, but the source material has been far too intricately embroidered in order to turn a relatively short, gentle and charming fantasy quest into an epic slog full of noisy battles and sub-plots. -- source link
