Written by a black woman, it’s the first book I think of on the subject. I’m sure they are many others though. Worth a read. I read this book in my History MA program. It literally made me sit down and go woah in a way few books have. They Were her Property totally obliterates popular mythologies surrounding white Southern women and exposes the pervasive atrocities of slavery and the casual brutality of the system. I recommend it 100%. -- source link
