ancient-archives:Vases from the pre-Roman period placed in a grave inside a Samnite tomb discovered at Pompeii archaeological excavation site. The upper class Samnites of Pompeii were had Hellenized tastes and the surplus capital to indulge them. The Alexander mosaic from the House of the Faun is indicative of the skill level of the Greek artists they patronized. The Samnites spoke Oscan (and the elite was fluent in Greek as well) but they produced no literary, historical, or philosophical texts in their native language. Rome annexed Pompeii in 80 BC and raised it to the status of a colony. As the Oscan epigraphic evidence in the forum shows, Samnite and Roman culture co-existed until AD 79. -- source link
