A few months ago, I saw a cat walk out of the tall grass in our backyard. Now, you have to understand that we live in the middle of the woods, so this was rather unexpected. There was a summer heat wave going on at the time, and I was worried about the cat getting dehydrated, so I took him a bowl of water. When I got a better look at him I noticed he looked kinda skinny, so I brought out some fried chicken from the night before. My kids saw me petting him and they immediately fell in love. One of the kids named him Trophy because they all said his hair made him look like a gold statue. Ever since then, he started coming to our back door more and more often. My wife bought a bag of cat food and started feeding him every day. We didn’t know if he actually belonged to someone else, so we said he was our “part-time pet.” Eventually we learned from our next-door neighbors that some other neighbors had moved away several months ago and abandoned three cats when they left. Our neighbors had taken already in two of the cats, and they were glad to hear we were taking good care of the third one. So now Trophy is our pet. Except… we’re not allowed to have pets in the house we’re renting (other than our little Gitrog frog.) So for now he still has to sleep outside. With the rain coming back, it breaks our hearts to not let him in, but it would be dishonest to lie to our landlord. Fortunately, we’ll be moving in January and when we do Trophy will be able to move in with us. For now, I’ve made him a little makeshift house that’s just his size and stays dry inside. And that’s the story of how we got our first family cat. -- source link
