In the year 1573, Akbar finally put an end to the 166 year old Gujarat sultanate, joining the province of Gujarat to the Mughal empire. To commemorate this victory, a #monumental gate was erected on the southern wall of the completed Jami masjid complex in #Sikri. The Buland Darwaza rises upto 15 stories and still stands as the highest doorway in the world. Built entirely out of red sandstone with black and white marble inlay, this archway comprises various terraces, kiosks, chhatris, balconies,domes and turrets arranged in a perfectly symmetric manner with 42 grand high steps leading to the entrance. A very interesting quote inscribed in Persian on the main gateway reads “The son of Mary said - The world is a Bridge, pass over it, but build no houses upon it. He who hopes for a day may hope for eternity, but the World endures but an hour. Spend it in prayer for the rest is unseen.” The presence of this unique quote speaks of the cultural syncretism which freely existed during Akbar’s reign.
