spicywarhoon: Mack takes on the Mafia in the Sunshine State in Miami Massacre, the fourth of the now nearly endless Mack Bolan Executioner novels. Like a lot of the original series (those actually written by Don), this one follows hot on the trail of the previous books, assuming you know the backstory and understand why Bolan is out for blood. Wrapping up his adventures in Arizona from the last novel, Mack heads to Miami to bust up a Mafia meeting and finish off a Capo he’s been following across the country. Along the way he encounters a hippy rock band, a Cuban-refugee army, the government agents who’ve been hunting him (including Brognola), and even a nudist community. Pendleton does a great job with this one, stepping on the gas from the jump and never letting up. Mack fights his way across the USA, breaks out some great hardware, gets the girls a few times, and even poses as a guitarist in a hippy band. I’d place the scene where Bolan casually strolls through a mobster infested hotel, blasting criminals as they open the door and playing the full-on Angel of Death as one of the best Pendleton wrote - and that’s no small compliment. I’d have liked to see the Talifero brothers (Mafia enforcers/hitmen) fleshed out a little more, but given the size limits I can give that a pass. Miami Massacre works best if you’re aware of the story of the first three books, but functions ok as a standalone as well. Highly recommended - as are all the original Executioner novels written by Don Pendleton - for any fans of vigilant justice, men’s adventure, or latter day pulps. -- source link
