dottewa:theultraintrovert:yarrahs-life:frantzfandom:convolutednormality:geniuzoneee:marvelgifs:Adapt to thisLET ME JUST POINT OUT THE VARIOUS FLAWS OF LOGIC HERE. FIRST OF ALL DARWINS POWER IS TO LITERALLY ADAPT TO ANYTHING IN THE EFFING UNIVERSE. HIS POWERS DEEMED IT TOO DANGEROUS TO FIGHT THE HULK AND TELEPORTED HIM TO ANOTHER COUNTRY. HE ONCE BECAME PURE COSMIC EFFING ENERGY AND SHORTLY AFTER REMATERIALIZED AS A HUMAN BEING TO PREVENT HIS DEATH. DARWIN IS LITERALLY INEFFINGVINCIBLE. AND YOU MEAN TO TELL ME THAT A PATHETIC BALL OF KINETIC ENERGY FROM SEBASTIAN SHAW MERKS HIM?!?!?! THEY OBVIOUSLY ARE OUT TO KILL THE BLACK MAN IN THE PLOT AND LITERALLY WROTE THIS SCENE WITH NO REGARDS TO DARWINS POWERS WHATSOEVER AND ITS FRUSTRATING THAT THEY WOULD GO OUT OF THEIR WAY TO KILL HIM OFF LIKE THATI’m saying. Even in sci fi we ain’t safein my headcanon darwin literally became a being of energy and ascended to another plain of existence so he doesn’t have to deal with anymore of this white nonsenseEven in Scifi? We not safe in real life.thank you I’ve been saying this for the longest!!!!! He is a damn omega level mutant, meaning in the movie he would be a class 5! Dude even adapted into a God and became the God of Death! Dude was college educated in the comics and they made him a taxi driver…like Black folks weren’t educated in the 70’s. And they didn’t even acknowledge that he was an Afro Latino…his name is Armando Munoz, he’s one of the few Afro latino superheros and they did him so dirty.A movie that’s a metaphor for prejudice/racism/etc did the black guy dirty.Let me point out how wonderfully played straight this was in the comics compared to the movie, which because of the characters I still say should’ve been called X-Factor instead of X-Men First Class (it only had one first class member and he was a first run X-Factor member too):As stated before, Darwin is biracial Latino/African-American. I say biracial because we see his father in X-Factor (III), and his father is not Afro-Latino. But when we meet Darwin, with his power to adapt as best as he needs to to survive, he looks like this- Do you see how pale he is there? He’s so white he could be related to Domino (who pure white skin or not actually is white underneath it and has the features to prove it) and he has no facial features to distiguish his ethnicity. When he shows up in X-Factor he looks like he’s even whiter than Longshot there- although his facial features are shifting. It turns out that Peter David used it to make a pretty clever racial commentary, though. You see, this is Darwin in the 70s and then Darwin in Detroit, a mostly black city by population but still not a safe place, according to his biology. As Darwin lives with X-Factor and feels like he can trust them and that he’s actually safe, however? He starts to get darker skinned, his features become less European-passing. To the point where he eventually looks like and even until even apart from his friends and alone he feels safe enough to be instead of the first example.I wish I could find the panels for this, but it turns out that the reason he pales himself out is because his body thinks being paler and whiter-featured is how to survive. When he’s finally in a place long enough he can feel safe being his actual skin-tone and having African-American facial features, he slowly but surely goes back to it, and eventually feels confident enough to stay that way regardless. They even directly talk about how it’s because his body evolved to try and make him pass for white, and how part of it is that he’s around Monet, who is an African Muslim (not black but she is dark-skinned) and Rictor, who is Mexican, making him feel more comfortable with his original ethnicities, and that several of his teammates aren’t passing mutants like Guido and four-fingered Longshot and visibly-marked-forever even if they look or are white Shatterstar and Madrox and Layla Miller. In fact the only members who can pass for white despite the mutant element and without any comment are actually-Scottish Wolfsbane (who has a really visible mutation when she transforms) and actually-Irish Siryn. And it is important to mention even most of the white members of the team can’t pass, because it’s what helps him stop trying and accept being himself on a literal cellular level.Even in the fiction itself, visibility turned out to be important. And he was a well-played metaphor on white privilege in a relatively low distribution comic but a fumbled attempt at including a black character in a blockbuster movie franchise. He was the only good guy killed off and he was literally the least likely to die in the entire Marvel universe. What does that tell you about how much they missed the point of Darwin? -- source link
