archaardvarkarchive:theflashisgone:archaardvarkarchive: theflashisgone: pallanophblargh: A really roughly compiled, scatterbrained ‘noph dump. My head is full of holes and this is the flavor of rot that currently inhabits it.Featuring Nok poses, Neng’s accidental expedition to the compost pile (cut short by Qiara), and Qiara having An Accident (that just so happens to give her a scar AND a cool girlfriend.)Nok still needs her markings sorted out and I am every kind of ashamed. I’ll keep working on it. I hope these things are carnivores, because that is a skull that can generate some bite force. *pandas take umbrage* #invalidating much#carnivora aren’t less cool just because some of them don’t hunt muchPandas are weird as shit both for herbivores and for carnivorans.Did I say carnivory was a criterion for coolness? What I was trying to communicate was that anatomically, this creature is a predator. That this is absolutely the skull of something that can bite really fucking hard like a weasel. If it was a real animal and was herbivorous (which would be apparent in the back teeth), it would be secondarily herbivorous after a primarily carnivorous evolutionary history. If it walks like a duck and it quacks like a duck, it probably comes from a lineage of ducks and might even be one itself. 2. “I hope” implies a “should,” if not it’s somehow a ‘worse’ outcome. Y/N? 1. weird is fun (seriously do you even Tumblr) just to clarify, ur response to “pandas take umbrage” is to quickly scramble to throw more shade? (shade that doesn’t make much sense on this platform at that) *You Have Unlocked Bonus Level* now primarily insect-eating Carnivora like aardwolves, (and with lotsa plants added in:) sloth bears, and skunks are also ticked off 3. yeh nobody’s disputing recent ancestor anatomy. just like nobody would for pandas. the issue was tone. Some animals switch back and forth between herb/carn. There used to be carnivorous ungulates. all very interesting In the event people were still curious about ‘noph skulls in the notes of this post, here are some rusty sketches in progress to show what might be going on. Yeah, they’re a little weird. (And I swear someday I’ll put the proper work into sorting it out.) A lot of that space is brain case.Pallanophs are carnivores, but they have very omnivorous habits. They have flat incisors as well as pointed ones, and grinding molars behind their carnassials. (Though they don’t eat super fibrous plants, more tender buds/young leaves/fruits/fungi etc.) Pallanoph bite strength isn’t of great importance, since they dispatch prey with their feet. I will admit that the shape of the jaw will likely shift as I continue researching. -- source link
