RAPID WEIGHTLOSS I’ve made a post that rapid weightloss isn’t healthy, which was followed by voting in my Insta stories, and some of the voters chose “why not” option. I was talking 10 kg (22 pounds) per month and above. Indeed, even that amount of weight to lose is already too much, because according to the British Heart Foundation one should do gradual weight loss of 1-2 pounds (0.5 – 1 kg) a week. And then I started doing my research to bring you scientific based evidence, and I found Minnesota Starvation Experiment, which is a remarkable clinical study performed at the University of Minnesota between 1944 and 1945. It was designed to determine the physiological and psychological effects of severe dietary restrictions. Why would I use this starvation experiment as an example? Because to drop 10 kg per month or more one does enter into starvation mode, which is very different from calorie deficit. The study was divided into 3 phases: a 12-week controlled diet of approximately 3,200 kilocalories of food each day; a 24-week starvation phase, causing each participant to lose an average of 25% of their pre-starvation body weight; each subject’s dietary intake was immediately cut in half to about 1,560 kilocalories per day.; and a recovery phase, in which various rehabilitative diets were tried. And here is the most interesting part: prolonged semi-starvation produced significant increases in depression, and hysteria. Participants exhibited a preoccupation with food, both during the starvation period and the rehabilitation phase. Sexual interest was drastically reduced, and the volunteers showed signs of social withdrawal and isolation. There was a decline in concentration, comprehension and judgment capabilities; there were marked declines in the basal metabolic rate, reflected in reduced body temperature, respiration and heart rate. If some of your friends or relatives is doing extreme dieting, please show them this post. Health is wealth, and we should treat it with respect. Gradual and healthy will always win over rapid and drastic. Stay healthy. #weightloss #onlinefitnesscoach https://www.instagram.com/p/CPh-vadhZiI/?utm_medium=tumblr -- source link
