margotfonteyns: Pearl Argyle, a pioneer of British ballet who was considered one of the great beauties of her generation. She created roles for both the Ballet Rambert and Vic-Wells Ballet (later Royal Ballet) when both companies were starting out, but her legacy would be ultimately obscured by her sudden death at the age of 36. The best eulogy I’ve found was by famed ballet photographer Sterling Henry Nahum (‘Baron’), who wrote: “Her beauty, serenity, poise and maturity at a time when our ballet was young and unacclaimed, ensure her an important place in its history and an unforgettable place in our memories.” [Photo by Gordon Anthony of Pearl in Frederick Ashton’s Pomona, Sadler’s Wells Ballet, 1937.] -- source link
