It was originally built by Sauron, to guarf Mordor’s North from invasion. When Sauron fell, it was taken over by Gondor. Along with Isenmouthe and Durthang, they protected Gondor from invasion by evil. Gondor also built two towers in the Black Gate, Narchost and Carchost. Eventually though, the defenses failed and were taken by the enemy. After that they became places of dread. It was here that the last battle of the War of the Ring was fought. -- source link
