Free-motion quilting: Although I’ve made a lot of quilts, most of them I’ve quilted with straight lines with my walking foot. I’ve tried free-motion quilting a few times, but I’m not particularly comfortable with it. I usually feel that I can trust the results of my straight line quilting, but I don’t feel that I have the same consistency with free-motion. For this project with JOY fabrics, I wanted to try something different with the quilting. I felt like doing more than just straight lines would change the feeling of the quilt, and would also give me some practice. I’ve been watching some videos (including Angela Walters’ “Midnight Quilt Show” and other tutorials), and I decided to give it a try. I sketched out some potential designs using Adobe Illustrator Draw - where you can actually draw in layers on top of photos, on you iPad (see first photo) - so it was almost like “auditioning” designs while actually getting the practice in drawing them out. I’ve learned a lot through this process! I’m starting to see the importance of considering quilting density. I had to make sure in the white sections to quilt densely enough to balance out the coloured areas. I think the texture that the quilting has given it is pretty fun! I could also feel improvement as I progressed on the quilt, which is great. I think this experience has made me feel more confident in my free motion skills. My dog Ollie loves this quilt too, I can’t put it down without him trying to go take a nap on it! ha ha.I’ll share photos of the finished quilt on Friday, when I’ll be part of Tamara Kate’s blog hop! -- source link
