gem-femme: hailneaux:This is why I say Black American music is THEE SUPREME. All from lil ol us stripped from everything, we create abundance out of nothing but soul. And this chart stops at 1992. Think of all we created 1992-present. I really fucking love that this includes house music. The genre is so often ignored and looked over so seeing it be recognized makes me incredibly happy. House was started specifically by black queer people and since June is both Pride Month™️ and Black Music Appreciation Month™️, give it a listen if you want a peek into this side of our culture. House music is severely under appreciated and doesn’t get nearly the attention it deserves, even among black queer people, despite it being created as the embodiment of the black queer experience and culture, especially when it comes to the ballroom scene. It was birthed from our desire to express ourselves freely despite living in a society that wants to limit and erase us. So much of modern trends among us modern queer people wouldn’t exist without house music and the ballroom scene. It is a pillar of our culture. Even if house isn’t your cup of tea, please take the time to recognize how important and influential it is. It was, and still is, a huge source of fun and freedom and energy meant to help combat the effects of our oppression and to help bring us together and reinforce solidarity. There’s a reason PLUR (an acronym for peace, love, unity, and respect that dominates rave scenes) came out of the existence of house. -- source link
