Bolly minis [3/3]: Asha Parekh X Sajan (1969)As you can probably tell, I’m a Bollywood fanatic but I haven’t ever commented on why I do this ….more than the nostalgia, the outfits, the hair, the makeup there’s a bigger conversation that has inspired me to make so many of these pieces What’s interesting is the fact that since the very beginning of the film industry in India, actresses have fallen subject to a “shelf life,” or in other words, they are only as memorable as the years of their youth.I find it rather strange that after actresses have supposedly “expired” from the industry so many big names & their iconic moments seem to vanish with them. This is why I choose to represent supposedly “forgotten” stars because it reopens the conversation about what is iconic? What is memorable? And more importantly, what it means to be a female in the industry Most of you probably don’t know a lot of the actresses I’ve illustrated but if any of you have even wikipediad a name from my series then that means I’ve done something right It’s funny how easy it is to get swept away with the times. In fact it’s easy to just label things as “throwback” or pay “homage” to someone by recycling their style because it’s cool…but then I could ask how many of you can name the scene I’m referring to, or better yet if you’ve ever sat through an entire Bollywood film made before 1990? This is part of the reason I will continue to add to this series because it’s more than just pop culture or making something old new again, it’s asking what’s in a name? It’s making sure no one gets left behind -- source link
