walkuntilthedaylight:twospiritsdancing:mccartneymadness:John Lennon in Spain, 1966 One thing that intrigues me is how John often claimed to be so miserable shooting this film but in most of the stills he seemed fairly happy and engaging. His castmates all had fond memories of socializing with him between takes and in their free time. He went to all the dinner parties and cricket games. I don’t remember any reports of him being out of it, quite the contrary. He gained the respect of the seasoned actors in the project with his dedication and desire to learn. I have no doubt John had must’ve had his moments of melancholy and boredom but overall, it was a positive experience. He’d admit it later on.John’s flair for the dramatics and self reflection earned him a reductive “Pining Sadsack” image that doesn’t ring quite true. He absolutely had existential issues and unresolved trauma, as well as occasional bouts of codependency but saying he was completely non-functional if he had to spend five minutes alone or with new friends is a stretch. He was involved with all kinds of people before Yoko even came along and for some reason that’s not discussed enough, if ever? this is the thing that makes me saddest about John Lennon’s life. i think “not wanting to take responsibility” is a factor, but i also think the insane and unprecedented circumstances of his fame removed his ability to see his natural guiderails in the same way it put the whole band in a “gilded cage”. at some point john started to increasingly believe he was non-functional without a partner. his relationship with paul was too fundamentally immature and volatile to give the confidence grounding to strike out on his own in the adult world (and hey - the Beatles were “The Boys” forever, so he didn’t have to!), and yoko - whether it was her conscious intent or not - did essentially everything in her power to disempower him and keep him from realizing how capable he actually was.it’s just so depressing to look back at his history and see fleeting moments of personal empowerment like this, or the back half of The Lost Weekend, or his bermuda trip experience either squandered or quashed. -- source link
