tigerrknight: The meanings behind the colors. Gay pride flag - Gilbert Baker (1978) Hot Pink / Sex was the first stripe to go, the official reason being that the specific dye used was discontinued.Turquoise / Magic and Indigo / Serenity were later merged into Royal Blue / Harmony so Turquoise wouldn’t be obscured by street poles when hung vertically. I find these explanations for eliminating the Sex and Spirituality/Magic stripes unacceptable (basic research into textile arts shows there was no shortage of hot pink dyes in 1979) and feel there were underlying subconscious or unconscious reasons of sanitising the movement in the name of respectability politics: take out the stripe for Sex so that cis-hets arent reminded that LGBT people often do it, take out the stripe for Magic and sever our (at that point) century-long ties to pagan spirituality (since at least Oscar Wilde).Sanitise our struggle to make it more acceptable to our oppressors. -- source link
