Image credit: Amy Westcott What is the difference between fashions inspired by film such as the Marlene Dietrich/Annie Hall look that come around again and again and others that are mere fads, e.g. the ballet trend we sat after Black Swan? We have yet to know if the Black Swan fashion trend is a fad, time will tell us that. What needs to be considered is that the Annie Hall look itself was made up of garments already appropriated from previous decades, namely the 1920/30’s. Diane Keaton’s androgynous Ralph Lauren costumes incorporating menswear slacks and neckties were a nod to the 1920s flapper, when women used to chop their hair short and tape down their breasts as a rebuttal to La Belle Époque’s feminine gaiety. Wearability is a factor too. Designers rummaging through costume rails for inspiration will hone in on looks they know can be replicated on the high street easily and cheaply. The 1970s was a retrospective decade full of trends from every era leading up to it. Hardly surprising designers now plunder it so brazenly for stimulation. -- source link
