blackladyjeanvaljean:eurotrottest:beepbeepblurp:jerkstyles:seebeyondthesex:helloootricksterr:12-gauge-rage:The Earth is lumpy.I was not aware of this. thank youthis makes so much sense but it makes me so uncomfortable i wish i hadn’t seen thisOne time my bf was telling me about people who argue about intelligent creation by saying “the earth is perfectly round!” And I said “but it isn’t!” And he was so proud of meokay so im just learning thisI’m not happy about thisWhat? No. I just—What? No! Such a misleading gif! This is a demonstrative image of surface features, dudes. It’s not what the planet actually looks like! The Earth is over 12,000 kilometers across. The highest point, Mt. Everest, is ~9 km high; the lowest point, the Marianas Trench, is ~11 km deep. All told, this makes the earth smoother than your average cue ball. Once you get above a certain mass in space (it depends on what you’re made of, but Earth is WELL above this threshold), gravity makes you pretty much spherical. However, our ration about an axis does spin us into a slightly oblate shape—basically, we’re ~40 km wider at the equator than we are at the polesBut guys. Our planet ain’t called the Blue Marble for nothing. This image exaggerates major geographical features by like several orders of magnitude. The earth is round to within 0.3% and smooth to within 0.09%. Because…gravity. -- source link
