surprisebitch:avarise:meghladon:surprisebitch:rightbackheretohauntyou:hummingbirdbandit:Professor: You should be teaching yourself the material.Me: Then why, pray tell, am I paying you?student: i really don’t understand the material. can you explain it? professor who also doesn’t understand the material: oh haven’t you heard? that is university and work life though, it’s training you to be independent and keep up with the reading by yourself because once you start doing the job that you earned after your degree, no one’s gonna teach you. your boss won’t. well you might be lucky if you end up getting taught it but most of the time, they’d expect you’d have all the information ready and you are the most educated on it. you will do all the research and explain the material through a presentationno one is born dumb or is naturally dumb; no one is also born smart. you just gotta do the reading and study. go to office hours if you have questions., also attend the lecture cause 99% of the time, a prof will test you on exclusive lecture-only material so this gives you even more incentive to attend, and that’s not an unfair question because profs work hard too to prepare lessons and teach the material. if you miss one, ask a classmate on what you missed.now there are profs who probably are not the best teachers. well, you just gotta find outside sources or if your Teaching Assistant is better, ask them. like google is your bestfriend too if a concept isnt as cleartl;dr: there will be bad profs and good profs but either way, you will still have to put in most of the work independently because that’s work life tooif you’re finding it hard to study, you can youtube tips and follow studyblrs to help you get motivated.Facts, because I started my first job after graduation and I’m fucking LOST. No one gives you a fucking user guide or comprehensive training, they give you work and a deadline and if you don’t know, you better figure it out or ask someone who does Everyone has their own work and deadlines, too, they’re not going to handhold your way through your jobAs someone who works in education, fuck this. Education for YOU as a student is NOT a fucking job. and it shouldn’t feel like one. It’s a journey and commitment where you work with the educator to achieve mutual knowledge on a topic. Yes, you do your part to teach yourself what you can, but there is a limit of what you can achieve on your own. There’s a fucking reason teachers are being paid and its because they’re there to HELP guide you out of where you’re stuck, and to show you a deeper perspective that you might have missed.if you don’t know how to be independent, that’s a separate issue from being lost in academia. Don’t you fucking dare intertwine the two and use it as a basis to justify lazy teaching.^^^you’re right.i just interpreted OP’s points as expecting to be spoon-fed everything which never happens in university since its still up to the students to research.but you’re absolutely right. teachers should work with the students and vice versai wasnt justifying lazy teaching in anyway. i resent bad profs (i’ve had a share of them unfortunately) but i also had really good profs who really take the time to make sure i understood the material when i had questions. and that really should be an educator’s job.i’m just speaking in a realistic setting where if there was an event that you encounter a bad prof, it could be expected in the work place too unfortunately and you still have to take initiative to figure out an answer and not call yourself “dumb”but everything you said i support 100% and are all validHave courage, be kind. xx -- source link
