Portrait of a Woman (c.1770). Anton von Maron (Austrian, 1733-1808). Oil on canvas. Hermitage. The young woman stands straight-backed, her left hand holding a book she is reading. She is wearing an elegant pale pink silk dress trimmed with ribbons and lace. Her tall powdered coiffure in the manner of the Rococo is topped by an ornate headdress made of white tulle with little roses. The two strands of large pearls around her neck are fastened with a pink bow at the back. This portrait is enchanting for the astonishing nobility of its colour scheme that is constructed on a combination of pink and deep wine-red on a dark green background and is reminiscent of the Venetian school. The subject cannot be called a beauty, but with skilful professional depiction and a soft, free manner of painting the artist managed to invest her likeness with a sense of immediacy and natural grace. -- source link
