April 2015 - Tulip ‘Queen of the Night’YAY!!! These are my favorite tulips. Depending on who you get them from, the vary from deep purple to purple red to almost black. The almost black ones are the best, but also the hardest to find. Weirdly, I found the almost black ones at a grocery store (my beloved Krogers)… all other suppliers they are more like the one above. Still, they are gorgeously rich. I’ve been trying to grow them as perennials for years, only to realize that they aren’t great for naturalizing. Managed it once, but apparently that’s a bit of an anomaly. I’m assuming the warm weather is here to stay, maybe, so I went ahead and worked on a bed and added a few of the goji berry seedlings. Also worked on extending another bed and tried an experimental system for the hops to climb onto. V has been setting up more supports in the garden for our eventual overhead/vertical projects. In the heat of the summer the sun is pretty harsh, especially on him, so we’re trying to lift up the vines so they can cover at least some of the paths to provide shade. This is part of our huge long term project for the overall garden. As always, things are accomplished by doing a little bit each day. I also pulled up part of the old half-rotted bench down by the river and incorporated it into building part of a bed. Also saw the remarkably blue bird again while chewing over how I put together one of the hugel terraces. The weather has been amazing but I’ve been mostly indoors doing research. Have been hesitating to seed out more trays, until I get more things planted out into the beds. I think we’re at our maximum amount of seedlings we can handle taking care of before getting overwhelmed / it stops being fun.Oddly, we are not having good results from the Asclepias this year. -- source link
