Once a part of a military uniform, from a Hungarian cavalry dating back to the 15th century, today it inspires multiple stage outfits and fashion houses. From Balmain and Alexander McQueen (whose education included Gieves & Hawkes, with an own uniform department) to Rihanna to Michael Jackson to Adam Ant to Jimi Hendrix to The Beatles - they rock the braided jackets. The Beatles didn’t really wear Hussar uniforms for the Sgt. Pepper cover, but made the uniform style iconic in the music industry. And before them, every Regency fashionista in the Western world had her version of it, from smart spencers to snazzy coats (pelisses). It’s been a fashion design classic for 200 years!(Note: a proper Hussar uniform usually featured two jackets - the tight fitting dolman, and the coat like pelisse. The pelisse was typically lined with fur, slung over one shoulder, and only worn as a jacket in very cold weather. In the photos above, Jimi Hendrix wears a pelisse, while Adam Ant wears a dolman. The stage uniform featured by David Rogers shows both a dolman and pelisse) -- source link
