Sorrowful News (1872). Frederick Daniel Hardy (English, 1827-1911). Oil on panel. Wolverhampton Art Gallery and Museum.Hardy’s fondness for domestic subjects is shown by this work. The scene depicts two young women; one is crying, while the other comforts her. The woman consoling her friend wears mourning clothes. A letter lies at the distressed girl’s feet, and her freshly-picked flowers have been dropped in shock. The discarded blooms allude to the letter’s bad news, and also symbolise mortality. -- source link
