AletschgletscherThe Aletsch Glacier in the Bernese Alps is the longest glacier in that mountain range. The glacier comes together just downhill from the spot where this photo was taken as four valley glaciers come together. The assembly point is marked well by the appearance of several lateral moraines – visible areas of dirty ice that were formerly along the edges of the smaller glacier but that are now trapped in the center of the flowing ice. The estimated ice thickness in this area is over 900 meters. The Aletsch glacier, like most glaciers in the Alps, is retreating at its terminus as it melts faster than new snow accumulates. Between 1880 and a report from 2009, the glacier had shortened by 33 meters.-JBBImage credit:https://flic.kr/p/KTRiYGReference:http://bit.ly/2cp3nPE -- source link
