La Svizzera is the Italian version of The Swiss Tourist Board (Schweizerische Verkehrszentrale – SVZ) magazine, also called die Schweiz. Herbert Matter designed this cover for the Summer, 1935 issue using his distinctive photomontage technique, also seen in the well-known posters he did for SVZ and the town of Engelberg. For this design, Matter uses his familiar snow-capped mountain landscape and close-up photograph of a subject’s face. The child, tilted, softly faded and overlaid with a colorful butterfly and flower flowing out of the corner of her mouth give this design a surreal quality, a common characteristic of Matter’s work of the 1930’s. The small headline on the bottom of the cover further encourages a visit to the region during the summer season, “The Grison Alps, land of the sun”. Shortly after he designed this cover, Matter left Switzerland and moved to New York. The la Svizzera cover features a photograph taken by Matter in 1929, “Young girl with large dark eyes: Gypsy Girl”. The second image above shows a similar photograph by Matter from Typographische Monatsblätter ™, February, 1933. -- source link
