He was 91.He began his acting career at 24 when Laurence Olivier cast him to understudy Mitch and Stanley Kowalski in the British premier of A Streetcar Named Desire. He later took over the lead, playing opposite Vivien Leigh.His Broadway début came in 1955, in Tonight in Samarkand, with Louis Jourdan. He decided to make the United States his permanent home, and became a citizen in 1961.He originated the role of Captain von Trapp in The Sound of Music (1959), and Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote “Edelweiss” especially for him, because he was also known as a folksinger. But his most famous stage role was probably Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof. Although he didn’t originate it, he played about 2,000 performances of it over the years.
