profgrewbeard:don56:“Nude on the Moon” (1961) directed by Doris WishmanHere is a movie with no redeeming qualities. Doris Wishman had a decades long career making cheap explotation films. Her early efforts were ‘nature films’ filmed in nudist camps with some flimsy plot line. The plot here is two scientist constructing a rocket ship and traveling to the Moon. They discover a garden paradise populated by skimpily dressed telepaths.Movies were made on the cheap by eliminating all the unnecessary frills like costumes, professional actors and writers. The only costumes of note in “Nude on the Moon” are the worst designed spacesuits in cinema history. Everybody else is limited to a pair of shorts.i would disagreeDoris Wishman is one of the unsung heroines of cinema. She saw the naturist films of the time and was unhappy with them having nothing resembling a plot so she made her own to give them plots, as flimsy as they may seem. She gave us characters and plotlines and even had women in her films who (though they were often sans costume) had more to do than just BE naked. She cut her teeth on these films and moved on to greater things including, what to me is her magnum opus, the horror film A Night To Dismember. She was an early pioneer, being one of the few women to direct sexploitation films in a highly male dominated industry and she should always be remembered for that.On a side note, Nude on the Moon was banned from theaters in New York, they rationalized that films shot in “actual” nudist colonies were ‘educational’ but that using nudity in a science fiction or fantasy concept was going too far and was just smut. -- source link
