Last night we were in Doylestown at the Mercer Museum for “Metalwork of Bryn Athyn Cathedral & Glencairn,” a presentation by artist and blacksmith Warren Holzman. Holzman, who has forged ornamental metalwork for both Glencairn and the Cathedral, teaches in Bryn Athyn College’s Building Arts Program. After the talk, he showed us his artistic response to the Mercer’s current exhibition, "Forging a Link: Metalsmiths Respond to the Mercer Collection.” His work in steel, wood, and LED light is titled, "—and that life was the light of men.” According to Holzman, “The sperm whale, most prized for the oil rendered from its blubber, was hunted to near extinction for light…My piece seeks to reinterpret this ritual sacrifice through narrative. The exploitation and macabre nature of our historic obsession with seeing and manipulating our environment after dark is all but forgotten in an era where light is no longer a luxury but rather an ever-present and increasingly problematic part of contemporary life…” -- source link
