On this day in history, 11th of February 1466 - birth of Elizabeth of York, first child of king Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville at Westminster Palace. Elizabeth was the first important heir to Edward’s yorkist regime, a sign that God had blessed the marriage and dynasty. Elizabeth’s birth was celebrated with great pomp as if she were a male heir. What would be around 125 pounds now was spend by the King on a jeweled ornament presented to the Queen “against the time of the birth of our most dear daughter Elizabeth”. A few days later the baby was christened in Westminster Abbey “with great solemnity”, her sponsors being her grandmothers, Cecily, Duchess of York and Jacquetta Woodville, Duchess of Bedford.. Her godfather was Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick .The earliest authentic notice of Elizabeth after her christening is in 1467, when the manor of Great Lynford in Buckinghamshire was granted for her life. On the 9th of October the following year, the King commanded to pay the Queen 400 mark annually “in consideration with expenses which she incurred about the Princess Elizabeth and Mary (born that year), which sum was to be paid until they were otherwise provided for”. - Edward IV by Charles Derek Ross (1974) -- source link
