Agnes Strickland (1846). John Hayes (British, 1786-1866). Oil on canvas. National Portrait Gallery.Although educated at home, Agnes Strickland benefited from her father’s belief that girls should have the same education as boys. In 1840, she embarked on the nine-volume historical work Lives of the Queens of England. Although co-written with her sister Elizabeth, it was agreed that Agnes would appear as author on all their publications. She is depicted holding a rolled piece of paper, with gold and coloured letters, and an elaborate illuminated border, possibly source material for her writings. -- source link
