ireallyneedtofindabetternamesoon:thefloatingstone:3 weeks ago just before I took a hiatus from the comic I was in a massive art slump. You guys probably remember me complaining that I had a ton of ideas but couldn’t get anything down apart from thumbnails (which I showed you guys)One thing I wanted to draw was Stretch after getting really into @tyranttortoise‘s fic SSLL. However, because I still feel endlessly guilty regarding AU content I didn’t want to draw anything of the characters because I’m still completely under the assumption that you guys will just absolutely hate and resent me if I show even the smallest passing interest in something that isn’t canon :( (that’s not an admonishment of you guys btw. That’s really how I feel). But since I was really struggling with an artblock, @jolie-in-the-underground said I should just draw this dude, get it out of my system, and move on to the canon stuff I have lined up. So I took her instructions as the “permission” I needed to draw something not-canon.However, despite starting the picture, the artblock still hit me hard and the stress just really crippled my ability to draw at all. So it sat on my desktop for almost a month now. And of course the more time went on, the worse I felt for wanting to draw and post something not canon. (this really is a big deal to me, guys… I know its dumb.)Today however… I dunno. I think I wanted something to colour without putting in the effort of actually drawing it first. And since the WIP was right there, I picked it up again and finished it. Using the opportunity to try some colouring things and playing with some other brushes I’m not familiar with. (like how the heck do you draw a waterfall? and what is secondary lighting? etc etc)Nevertheless, as much as I really REALLY like the end result… I am supremely nervous and self conscious about posting it. Especially since no, I still don’t actually like AUs…. I just really like Ty’s fanfic and how she writes the characters. Heck as far as I’m concerned they might as well be HER characters (apart from the canon ones). But I gathered my courage and decided to post it anyway. Only because I do like the end the end result. So think of this as fanart for Ty as encouraged by Jolie. Because really, that’s what it actually is more than anything. (Even though the fic doesn’t take place Underground or near Waterfall but ssshhhhh)And now with that done, I can move on to the myriad of canon-focused art I have lined up I want to do. Thank you for your patience with me u.u I’m sorry I’m so weird and have so much baggage. (please don’t be angry with me, ok?)Constructive criticism galore =DBefore I start though, I’d like to point out that style is style and I’m not touching that.Okay!I’ll start of by saying that I really like what you’ve done with the lighting, because that is the first thing I notice about this drawing. There’s no doubt where the light source is coming from, even with the rebound light, though it probably shouldn’t be hitting the front his left shoulder so harshly, as his chest would be blocking the light from the shoulder.Moving onto anatomy. There’s a nice curvy movement going on from the neck to the left foot, giving Stretch some life to him. Looking a little closer at the left leg though, the pose starts looking a little wonky, as the direction of the feet and the legs themselves don’t seem to completely line up.(I’m really sorry I don’t know how to make the pictures any smaller ;w;)Examples:Also the humeruses seem a bit too short. They usually reach down to the waist, whereas here they only seem to reach the middle of the rib cage. Even at an angle, they should reach further down and the lower arm would have to be foreshortened.Examples:A good rule of thumb to avoid these mistakes, is to draw the skeleton beneath the clothes first and make sure that it looks good. And that’s not just something I’m saying because Stretch is literally a skeleton, but because the skeleton, of any creature is what the entirety of that thing is made up of. Everything else is just kinda piled on top. It’s like how you can’t build a house without a fundament. It might look nice at first glance, but the longer you look the more you realize that it’s not really stable. The cigarette and smoke from it looks really good close to his face, but the longer it stays in the air, the more it disperses into the air, so the smoke further away, behind his head, should probably be dispersed more and look a bit more “blurry”.As for the the background, I really like the dynamics of the water with the foam, the gorgeous splish-splash and vapor at the bottom, and the colour scheme, not just making it blue, but giving it a purplish-hue, giving the picture a bit more life and, at least in my opinion, make it very aesthetically pleasing to look at. The water could probably use a bit more “shine” to it. Not too much as we don’t want to remove the focus from Stretch, but just a bit to make it look more “water-y”, as water is a very great reflector of light.I’ve got nothing on the grass. The grass looks really good. It just does. I could also move into composition but I don’t want to bore you because that can be some really dry shit sometimes lemme tell ya.Final note:You’re obviously skilled at your craft, and what I’ve done here is primarily nitpicking, but your proportions of the arms and legs could use some work. I myself am no master, but I have been doing a lot of anatomy studies lately, of both model skeletons and real people, and my recommendation to you to improve further from here, would be to do something similar, and just get a really good General Feel™ for body-proportions and such by looking up a lot of references on Google and/or take a few croquis classes. Google isn’t as thorough as an actual class, but on the other hand, it’s free and there’s nothing you can’t find there. You can even find virtual croquis classes such as:https://www.quickposes.com/enThis is my go-to page. You can pick and choose from a variety of challenges, customize is you want clothed, unclothed or dressed up models, if you want female, male or both kind of models. Maybe you don’t feel like drawing people, there’s also hands, feet, landscapes and many more things. You get to choose how many you want to draw, if you want a timer and how long you will have for each drawing, and even if you want some of them to be upside down to challenge your perception. It’s pretty swell. =DAnyway, that’s it. Keep up the good work! ^w^Hey :DThanks for the tips! Honestly, I think my major problem here was the pose itself. It’s not only from behind, but it’s not quite ¾ but it’s also got a twist to it so some of the pose is front ¾, some of it is simple from behind and some of it is ¾ behind. This is mainly why a lot of the weirdness happens.I’ve always struggled with feet as seen from behind. The added problem here is that Stretch is standing on an angled part of ground, so his balance is a little weird as his feet is not only seen from behind, but also at an angle, which changes things completely. As for proportion, Stretch does not have normal human proportions, but then neither does papyrus when I draw him. And I actually have different proportions for Stretch than I do Papyrus. I actually drew Stretch with much longer legs in general, which may be why the proportions are more obviously different from normal human 8-head measuring. But in this case, it’s actually done deliberately, since I am less concerned with having accurate human proportions as I am trying to draw a cartoon skeleton and changing his anatomy to fit his personality rather than measure it out to be 100% anatomically correct. The same goes for his arms but to a far lesser extent. I don’t like drawing papyrus (and by extension Stretch) with their wrists too far below their pelvis of they start looking too weird and less human in appearance. However, I do feel the arm facing us is a little flat. This is because of the pose which I’m not use to drawing and simply due to inexperience with it and a difficulty in finding references specifically for “3/4 hoodie hands in pockets” I like your first example of red-lines though, and feel maybe it would’ve been a better choice to go with. Sometimes I struggle knowing when to sacrifice anatomy for smooth curves and appealing lines rather than sharp corners. In this case I’d need to draw this angle more to get it completely right.Anyway, it all kinda boils down to how I decide to break anatomy rules to better suit a character as a cartoon rather than how realistic I can make them look. And as for references, yeah I feel ya XD I did life drawing for 2 years at college ya know. However, these days I generally reserve my anatomy studies for when I actually draw things, such as here. It’s probably the wrong way to think about it, but I always feel whatever anatomy study I’m doing is time I could better use to draw a finished picture while exploring anatomy at the same time. So I don’t do life drawing from photos as often as I probably should.I don’t generally like working from photos if it’s for study though as I find it to be extremely flat. However, I don’t live in a country where I could go and drop in on a nude life drawing class simply due to lack of models and lack of such classes being offered. So really, what I draw and post online is what I got. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -- source link
