The .25-25 Stevens and .25-21 StevensInvented by Capt. W. L. Carpenter in 1895, the .25-25 Stevens was an odd caliber to say the least. It was .25 caliber with a cartridge that hold 25 grains of powder, thus .25-25. What was interesting about it was its long casing, with an overall length of 2.63 inches. The .25-25 was commonly used for small caliber target shooting because of its longer range and accuracy, especially with the Stevens Breechloading single shot rifle. In 1897 Capt. Carpenter improved upon the cartridge by reducing the powders charge by four grains and bottlenecking the cartridge casing with a slight taper. The new .25-21 offered practically the same performance but shot cleaner and required less maintenance. -- source link
